No 8 day Croatia cruise tour is complete without Dubrovnik. This mesmerizingly beautiful city has enchanted globetrotters over many centuries, reaching even bigger popularity in last years as it came to double for King’s Landing, the capital of Seven Kingdoms in the famous and globally popular HBO epic fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. As GOT – as it is known around the world – enters its final season, it’s perfect timing and opportunity to visit the filming locations and follow in the footsteps of favourite Game of Thrones characters. A SONG OF ICE AN FIRE IN DUBROVNIK
Old Town of Dubrovnik provided such a base for series, that no special measures were necessary for scenery or special effects in order to play the fortified port city of King’s Landing, a contested stronghold of the Lannister family. GOT series grandly exploits the grandiose City Walls of Dubrovnik, its majestic fortresses, beautiful palaces, splendid churches and monasteries, its streets and squares. A world famous destination, Dubrovnik is enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage site and has plenty of its own stories and riches. No wonder it fitted so seamlessly with the complex story and settings of hit series such as Game of Thrones. Now, though practically every nook of Dubrovnik features in the series at least once, there’s a number of historical locations that appear prominently, offering a stunningly perfect background for all the Game of Thrones’ political intrigues, stormy romances, bloody battles, and thrilling duels.
Let’s take a brief walk around those spectacular filming locations in Dubrovnik.
City Walls. Dubrovnik’s city walls are among the most beautiful in the world. Well preserved and majestic, they offer an unparallel view of this treasure-city, its surrounding and endless seascape. Many of the series’ most important conversations, threats and promises or undertakings – such as a repair of damage after the Battle of Backwater – actually happened on the walls of Dubrovnik. Even if you don’t like walking around a lot, you can take advantage of having lunch aboard, enjoying the view as we anchor outside the City Walls.
Minčeta tower. This amazing medieval stronghold dubs as the House of Undying where Queen Daenerys Targaryen searches for the entrance in the walls while in pursuit of her stolen dragons.
Jesuit Staircase. Know also as Spanish Staircase, this location became famous around the world for Queen Cersei’s infamous Walk of Shame in Season 5, an event that sparked many troubles and unpredictable developments in the series.
Fort Lovrijenac. All the GOT fans will recognize the famous Red Keep where young King Joffrey plotted his evil exploits
The Island of Lokrum. This magical island in front of Dubrovnik is the location of Game of Thrones Museum. And naturally of the very holy grail of GOT – The Iron Throne itself. You can actually sit on it and become a king or queen of the Seven Kingdoms for a while!
Stone gates and old harbours. Historical Pile Gate ad Ploče Gate, along with Dubrovnik’s historical harbours were extensively used as filming locations, the places of invasions and farewells. These are but a few GOT filming locations which you can visit during your stay in Dubrovnik which is a part of our 8-day cruise Croatia tour.
